Indigenous Science and Peace Studies Master’s Degree Program

The linking of Indigenous Science and Western Science formulate breakthrough approaches to today’s greatest problems. Whether in policy, land management or the development of innovative technologies, Indigenous Science upends and transforms negative patterns of conventional science and social order. The ISPS Master’s Degree Program, at the University for Peace, Costa Rica, offers students the opportunity to be immersed in courses bridging the two ways of knowing; Indigenous Science and Western Science.

The first inception of the Indigenous Science and Peace Studies (ISPS) program was created in 1993 and was the world’s first accredited doctoral program. Taught from the perspective of Indigenous Mind and science, this program was lauded as a breakthrough in education. Over time the program expanded in reach and breadth of knowledge. Currently, ISPS is the only advanced academic degree program that addresses the interface of knowledge systems and fosters transdisciplinarity. No other program incorporates sacred sites, Indigenous cultural practitioners, ceremony and traditional Indigenous knowledge bases and science and links these comparatively with conventional approaches.

The curriculum of ISPS creates Indigenous scientists and practitioners who think and research from the perspectives of holism, interrelationship, and entanglement. To do so means not just decolonizing minds, but also engaging them in Indigenous science practices. Decolonial education exemplifies a paradigmatic approach for overcoming what Einstien called the “delusion of separateness”, which he identified as central contemporary pathology and problem. Decolonial education emphasizes Indigenous practices that are critical not merely for the survival of Indigenous peoples, but far beyond that for species survival, sustainability, cultural diversity, gender diversity, community building, local focus on biodiversity, healing history, and other important issues.

During their time in the ISPS program, students will participate in exchanges with Indigenous Knowledge keepers, community leaders, scholars and scientists from around the globe. Students will be challenged to learn how to not only integrate Indigenous Science with their work but to create a balance between both ways of knowing within themselves. The academic program deals not just with symptoms (global warming, racism, discrimination, inequality, etc.) but the root structures that create these symptomGraduates will be professional “go-betweens” with Western scientists; they have the capacity to impact policy making in important ways. ISPS will focus your determination and skills, igniting a clear fire vision for Earth’s renewal.
